14/03/17: Why do we need to drink water?

For today’s post, I will be talking why us humans need water because it has always baffled me why we need it.

If humans stopped drinking water then they wouldn’t survive. The human body is 60% water, the brain 70% water, the lungs in our bodies are almost 90% water…I think that you are getting the gist, this is the main reason why we need to continue drinking water.

Body Uses Water

Your body uses water in many ways. Water cushions and lubricates joints; nourishes and protects the brain, spinal cord and other tissues; keeps the body’s temperature normal; and helps remove waste through perspiration, bowel movements and urination. Humans are composed mostly of water, which is not surprising when you consider that humans descended from single-cell organisms that originated in the oceans millions of years ago.

Lack of Water

Water is more important for your body’s survival than food. You can live without water for approximately one week, but you can survive without food for more than a month. Lack of water, or dehydration, reduces the amount of blood in your body, forcing your heart to pump harder in order to deliver oxygen-bearing cells to your muscles. In the early stages of dehydration, you can become dizzy, irritable and experience headaches. As dehydration progresses, you become clumsy and exhausted. Your eyesight fades. In the last stages of dehydration, you may feel nauseous and begin vomiting. Without water, you will enter a coma and die.

Too Much Water

When you drink too much water, you can develop a condition known as hyponatremia, in which the excess water floods your body’s cells, causing them to swell up. Your swollen brain cells then cause a wide range of symptoms, including a bad headache, nausea, cramps, mental confusion, convulsions, fatigue, coma and death. Hyponatremia has killed runners during marathons.

Water Myths

You may have been told that in order to be healthy, you must drink eight glasses of water each day, and each glass must contain 8 ounces of water. You may also have been told that only water will fulfil this requirement, not other liquids that contain either caffeine or alcohol. Both ideas appear to be myths, according to Dr Heinz Valtin of the Dartmouth College Medical School. In a 2002 paper published in the “American Journal of Physiology,” Dr Valtin found no scientific evidence supporting consumption of eight glasses of water daily. He did find studies that suggested that caffeinated beverages and mild alcoholic drinks, such as beer, can contribute to the water needed by your body.

Basically, what I am trying to say in this is, don’t stop drinking water. If you’re not a fan of water then try and find some alternatives that are good for you:

Coconut Water

Coconut water derives from the inside of green coconuts and contains some essential electrolytes (a liquid or gel which contains ions and can be decomposed by electrolysis, e.g. that present in a battery). Coconut water is good since it hydrates the body whilst providing other beneficial nutrients such as vitamins and amino acids.


Tea is a healthy alternative to water with only a couple of drawbacks. It is a calorie-free beverage which comes in various flavours. There are many antioxidants in tea which boost immune function, neutralise cancer cells and prevent the formation of blood clots. One drawback with tea is that most teas contain significant amounts of caffeine. Caffeine acts as a diuretic which can promote dehydration.

Infused Water

Infused water, also known as spa water, consists of water with added fruits, herbs or vegetables. Infusing your own spa water at home with limes, lemons, oranges, cucumbers, mint or ginger provides a healthy alternative to plain water. These herbs can enhance a pitcher of cold water with natural flavours and add antioxidants to your beverage.


Watermelon quenches your thirst and assists in replenishing your body fluids. Ninety-two percent of watermelon is water. But, watermelon provides texture, flavour and vitamins, such as vitamin A, vitamin C and thiamine, not naturally found in drinking water. Additionally, this thirst-quenching fruit includes powerful antioxidants.

To be honest, I find that many fruits in general seem to help quench my thirst and are a lot more tasty compared to water.
